The Catholic University of Ghana has admitted the first batch of students to pursue a Special Post Graduate Diploma in Education programme at the Fiapre Campus.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professsor Matthew Glover Addo, disclosed that the programme is a collaboration between the University and the National Teaching Council (NTC) aimed at producing competent and professionally certified teachers for the country.
He explained that the special PGDE programme was introduced in line with Section 67(1) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), which mandates that no person shall practice as a teacher unless registered as a professional teacher.
According to him, many rural schools continue to face serious challenges due to the refusal of some teachers to accept postings outside urban centres, a situation he said affects effective teaching and learning.
Prof. Addo therefore called on teachers across the country to willingly accept postings to rural communities to help improve access to quality education in underserved areas.
The Director in charge of Teacher Licensing at the National Teaching Council (NTC), Mr. Francis Addae, commended the Catholic University of Ghana for partnering with the Council to train teachers professionally across the country.
He disclosed that the Catholic University of Ghana is the only private University among five selected Universities in Ghana currently undertaking the PGDE programme in collaboration with the NTC.
Mr. Addae acknowledged Dr. Jacob A.N. Maabobr Kor, of the Faculty of Education, for his role in ensuring the smooth coordination and successful execution of the programme.
The Registrar of the University, Mr. Emmanuel K. Kaba, administered the matriculation oath to the 75 students, officially ushering them into the academic community of the Catholic University of Ghana.
