CUG Introduces a Top-Up Course in Public Health Nursing

The Catholic University of Ghana (CUG), as the pioneer institution in Ghana to produce public health professionals, has been granted the permission by the regulatory bodies to run a top-up programme in Public Health Nursing for nurses who pursued bachelor degree programme in public health at CUG. The programme started on 31st May, 2021 with 106 students for the next six (6) months. Requirement for entry is BSc. Public Health and the applicants must be nurses (Health Care Assistant Preventive, Health Care Assistant Clinical, Nurse Assistant, Community Health Nurse, Public Health Nurse, Registered General Nurse and Registered Midwife)..

CUG is poised to train public health nurses to promote and protect the health and wellbeing of the citizens of Ghana in using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health related sciences. Such interventions by public health nurses have an impact on the health status of individuals and the entire population. Lecture schedules are both online and in-person with students being tutored online on Tuesdays and Wednesdays whilst the in-person lectures are on Saturdays and Sundays. The next batch of students will commence their tuition in August, 2021. CUG also runs other health related courses such as BSc. General Nursing, BSc. Midwifery and BSc. Public Health Nursing. Applicants seeking admission into BSc. General Nursing programme must have WASSCE or SSSCE (General Science option) with credit passes in three core subjects including English, Mathematics and Integrated Science as well as three elective subjects specifically Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Holders of Health Assistant Clinical (HAC) and Nurse Assistant Clinical (NAC) can gain admission after undertaking an intensive three-week Access Programme and passing an access exam; whilst holders of Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health will enroll at level 300. Applicants seeking admissions into BSc. Midwifery and BSc. Public Health Nursing programmes must have WASSCE or SSSCE with at least credit passes in six (6) subjects, including English, Mathematics and Integrated Science as well as three elective subjects either in General Science, General Art or Home Economics.
